At a Glance

Latin Name: Malus sargentii

Zones 4-8.

Mature Height: Grows 1-2' per year, height 8-12 ft. Can be pruned as shrub.

Climate: Full Sun,

Soil: Versatile and grows well in any soil type, from alkaline to acidic, and it prefers moist, well-draining soil. Is largely disease resistant.

Notes: Moderate Growth rate, White flower. Fruit is red, 1/4 inch in diameter, bears annually, and is persistent through winter.

Can be used to pollinate apple trees.

Wildlife: The fruit is a favorite food of the ruffed grouse, pheasant, woodpecker. Countless other birds rely upon the fruit, seed, buds, nectar, and flowers for food. Deer are drawn to crabapple trees for the fruit and to browse any new growth. Provides habitat for deer, ruffed grouse, pheasant, turkey and bees.

Doesn't require much pruning. Just lightly prune in winter to remove any damaged branches. Dense foliage and spreading branches make it ideal for Bonsai gardening.
