Climate: likes moist, rich soils.
Soil: Can tolerate sun or shade. Can be susceptible to frost damage in the northern half of Michigan’s lower peninsula.
Notes: Often used as an ornamental. Dark green wedge-shaped leaves that turn rose, to scarlet and violet in autumn. Flowers are small yellowing clusters surrounded by white petals. Berries are scarlet colored.
Wildlife: Very wide range of wildlife rely on the fruit. Birds include turkey, ruffed grouse, bobwhite, a variety of woodpeckers, and many others.
