Latin Name: Hibiscus syriacus

Other common names: Althea, Shrub Althea, Swamp Mallow, Rose Mallow, Hardy Hibiscus.
Mature Height/spread: 8 to 12 feet tall by 6 to 10 feet wide, upright, spreading/branching multi-stemmed with lots of vertical branches.
Soil/Climate: full sun to partial shade, prefers moist, well-drained soils.
It easily transplants. Annual pruning back will result in shoot vigor and larger flowers, likes hot weather. Rose of Sharon have good pollution tolerance – great for urban gardens.
Notes: Blooms continually from late summer into early fall. Variety of colorful flowers from lavender, white, pink, magenta, violet and blue. Useful for late season blooming. Makes a good shrub border. Space plants two to three feet apart for a single hedge row. Rose of Sharon are easy care/low maintenance.
Wildlife: Large exotic flowers are a favorite for hummingbirds and butterflies.
